Position: Environmental Technician / Project Coordinator

Employment: Full-time flexible (35 hrs/week)

Location: St. John’s with occasional fieldwork in Placentia Bay.

Anticipated Start Date: Immediately.

Salary: To be negotiated.

Description:

We are looking to fill a 12-month contract until April 2022 for the position of Environmental Technician/Coordinator (with possibility of extension). We are seeking an energetic individual who is motivated to bring positive change to freshwater and coastal ecosystems. The ideal candidate will be passionate about environmental causes, be self-motivated, and have an inquisitive scientific mind. The candidate will have an environmental science (or similar) background and administrative experience.

This staff will be responsible for completing project tasks related to ongoing water conservation and environmental monitoring projects. Tasks will include seawater collection, barnacle collection, storage and third party analysis, probe deployment for basic water measurements, as well as coordination of summer fieldwork students and community outreach. The staff will report regularly with funding agencies on project progress and engage the Board to contribute and provide feedback on projects as necessary.

Duties:

Technician

  • Probe sampling
  • Seawater collection
  • LittaTrap (TM) collection and waste audit
  • Field site visits
  • Documenting collected samples
  • Laboratory and storage coordination (including 3rd party analysis)
  • Using and maintaining specialized sampling equipment
  • Data analysis using laboratory results

Coordination

  • Completing project forms and applications
  • Coordination with volunteers and partner groups (e.g. Clean St. John’s)
  • Supervising summer fieldwork students (e.g. CCNL Green Teams)
  • Task delegation
  • Expense reporting to funding agencies (as required)
  • Reporting to any employment program partners
  • Coordination with volunteers and partner groups (e.g. Clean St. John’s)
  • Promoting events (i.e. via social media)
  • Reporting on event success, and any completed tasks as per funding requirements
  • Scheduling project tasks
  • Tracking expenses and budgets
  • Reporting to funding agencies
  • Completing project forms and applications
  • Engaging the Board on projects

Administration

  • Board communications, engaging the Board on projects
  • Maintaining partner contacts (e.g. ENGO, government)
  • Basic bookkeeping (i.e. tracking project expenses)

Requirements:

  • College diploma or greater in environmental studies, water quality or equivalent
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
  • Vehicle with valid driver’s license to visit sites in the Northeast Avalon Region
  • Knowledge of water quality and monitoring protocols would be considered an asset
  • Basic knowledge of local plant and wildlife species
  • Willingness to occasionally work outside normal business hours (e.g. attend evening Board meetings)
